What We Did Yesterday

Today’s diary is written by our staff at the publicity team who went to the K-DOC CLASS Seminar.

Let’s say, “Make a 2-hour long film provided that 90 days of shooting for 7 years and 50TB of capacity for shooting."

It sounds frustrating. The JEONJU Project has the K-DOC CLASS which is the film editing training program for Korean documentaries. Its goal is to present decent quality Korean documentaries through systemized procedures for documentary making and film by film-tailored training.

Here is the K-DOC CLASS Editorial Seminar; The Invisible Hands: How to work with international editors. The seminar opens with the question, “what if someone would join my work as an editor?” HA Shinae (producer) was the moderator on the left, and LEE Hak-min (editor), Patrick MINKS (editor), PARK Hyuckjee (director) were panels. Patrick MINKS attended via Zoom.

The first session was introduced by director PARK Hyuckjee. He participated in the FirstCut program and created a film called Girl who dreams about time. (The film is the World Premiere at the 23rd JEONJU IFF!) The reason why he decided to participate in the FirstCut program is that one is the sympathy of international audiences, and the other is the faint objectivity of editors.

Girl who dreams about time is about a Korean shaman girl. According to the director, one of the biggest challenges is that the cultural peculiarity of ‘Korean shaman’ can make international audiences share the feeling. Producing his work for seven years, he and editor Patrick MINKS were wondering if everyone would like it or not.

In the second session, LEE Hak-min (editor) shared his experience with a film called 206: Unearthed. While PARK Hyuckjee told his idea as a director, editor LEE Hak-min shared his idea from the perspective of an editor. Especially, he explained the overall process of editing such as when to choose an editor and when to work together. He also introduced how the communication between director and editor goes as the editor joined the project.

Participating as a mentor for Girl who dreams about time and 206: Unearthed, editor Patrick MINKS described the editor´s role as "I am the last questioner.” He said he worked on the constant questions, suggestions, and stories between the director and editor; he also metaphorised the narrative of documentary films for the ´mosaic tile.´ As he illustrated, the footage is like the process of making a mosaic pattern with a small tile.

Are you guys ready to make a nice mosaic pattern with the K-DOC CLASS?
