Silent Witnesses

Colombia, France 2023 79min DCP Color/B&W feature Experimental G
Overview

Silent Witnesses is an imaginary journey through the history of Colombia (and its cinema) during the convulsive first half of the 20th century, using the surviving footage of Colombian silent cinema solely.

Review

Luis OSPINA's works are worth re-evaluating. His filmography is one of a kind among other Latin American directors, continuing his work to shed light on the continent's culture and its relationship with world cinema. In particular, his personal history and the history of his home country influenced his critical work on external perspectives on Colombia. However, his films were always political in form, discourse, and subject matter. OSPINA, who passed away in 2019, left an uncompleted collaboration with Jerónimo ATEHORTÚA. This year, the completed version met the audience in Rotterdam. Silent Witnesses recreates an impossible love story between two characters, using the found footage technique based on images from 12 Colombian silent film era movies. The directors have revived the power of past films to create a work that details the ancient world but still tells stories and themes that are still relevant today. (Sung MOON)
