The JEONJU International Film Festival (JEONJU IFF, Festival Co-Director Min Sungwook and Jung Junho) signed an agreement with the Cineteca Nacional de Mexico to secure a way for Korean films to advance overseas and established the new Cineteca Nacional Mexico Award.

The JEONJU IFF agreed with the Cineteca Nacional de Mexico and the newly established Cineteca Nacional Mexico Award. Every year, the JEONJU IFF will present the award to one South Korean feature film and support screening at the Cineteca Nacional de Mexico.

The award, created to foster cultural exchange between South Korea and Mexico, is open to Korean feature films in the Competition Section and Non-Competition Section whose creators have agreed to compete for the award. The winners of the Cineteca Nacional Mexico Award will be produced in DCP with Spanish subtitles, released at the Cineteca Nacional de Mexico, and guaranteed to screen for six to eight weeks. The Cineteca Nacional de Mexico announced that it would actively promote the award-winning films by producing promotional materials in Spanish.

The Cineteca Nacional de Mexico signed an agreement with the JEONJU IFF this time, is run by the Secretariat of Culture of Mexico and one of the representative cinematic institutions mainly working on screenings and restoration. It is a complex cultural space with ten theaters located in Mexico. It has been over 50 years of history since its opening in 1974. The institution is a major space for films in Mexico City, equipped with an outdoor park, theaters, gallery, and video library where 1.3 million people visit a year. It is at the forefront of introducing the latest independent art films from around the world to Mexican audiences, featuring historically significant films and filmmakers.

The JEONJU IFF announced that it expects the collaboration with the Cineteca Nacional de Mexico to serve as a catalyst in creating a platform for Korean films to reach foreign audiences. “I am delighted about this agreement with the Cineteca Nacional de Mexico, which has introduced independent art films from around the world for a long time,” remarked Programmer Sung Moon, who has been working tirelessly to prepare a way for Korean films to enter overseas markets. “We will do our best to make the newly established Cineteca Nacional Mexico Award a great opportunity to introduce great Korean films to Mexican audiences.”

The Cineteca Nacional Mexico Award will be presented, starting this year at the 24th JEONJU IFF. The 24th JEONJU IFF will be held for ten days from April 27 (Thu) to May 6 (Sat), 2023, in and around Jeonju Film Street.
